You end up with the same thesis you wanted to write in the first place, but it takes you seven years to get your degree because of senseless, sometimes contradictory nitpicking from your advisor. By the time you get your degree you're so burnt out on academia that you jump back into the job market. Of course, since you don't have any marketable skills, that doesn't go so well either.
